The Inspire Philosophy: Watch Us Grow

The Importance of Planting in Early Years

Planting is a fundamental activity in early years settings, offering children hands-on experiences with nature, fostering curiosity, and promoting responsibility. It combines sensory exploration, scientific discovery, and the magic of watching life unfold. Engaging with soil, seeds, and plants nurtures children's understanding of abstract concepts like growth, life cycles, and sustainability while providing an activity that can be revisited and built upon over time.

Linking Planting to Early Childhood Pedagogies

Incorporating planting within a play-based approach aligns with various early childhood pedagogies, each bringing a unique perspective to the experience. The Montessori approach emphasizes hands-on, real-life experiences, encouraging children to take ownership of their environment. Caring for plants develops fine motor skills, patience, and responsibility, key elements in Montessori's practical life activities. Reggio Emilia values the environment as the "third teacher," and a garden serves as a living classroom where children’s natural inquiries guide learning. Observing, documenting, and discussing plant growth fosters language development, collaboration, and scientific thinking. Steiner Waldorf education, which cherishes a deep connection with nature, views gardening as an avenue for creativity and rhythm, allowing children to experience the natural cycle of seasons in a meaningful, holistic way.

Enhancing Play with a Mud Kitchen

At Kid’s Island Nursery, we extend the planting experience into our Mud Kitchen, further enriching sensory play. What better way to connect with nature than by growing fresh herbs and vegetables in the same space where children engage in exploratory play? Our fresh oregano and sweet potato plants thrive in large planters, inviting children to touch, smell, and observe their development. Rubbing oregano leaves between their fingers releases a fragrant, fresh scent, enhancing sensory experiences and stimulating curiosity. These encounters align beautifully with The Curiosity Approach, which champions open-ended, authentic experiences that inspire wonder and deep engagement.

Cultivating Responsibility and Connection with Nature

As the children nurture the plants, they develop a profound respect for nature, mirroring the principles of eco-conscious learning found in Forest School education. They eagerly check the soil for roots, observe changes over time, and celebrate the visible results of their care. These authentic, hands-on interactions with nature not only cultivate a sense of stewardship but also deepen their appreciation for the interconnectedness of life.

Nurturing Growth Through Play

At Kid’s Island, we believe in the process of play. While planting can be somewhat teacher-guided, the outcomes are invaluable. Children experience the joy of nurturing something to life, building confidence and resilience along the way. More than just an activity, it is a reflection of how we, as educators, guide and nurture young minds, giving them space, time, and the right environment to grow and flourish.
