The Inspire Philosophy: A Kaleidoscope of Colour

The Inspire Philosophy: A Kaleidoscope of Colour

Creating a Second Home for Learning

One of the compliments we receive most about our nursery in Dubai space is that it feels like a “second home.” Over time, we have reflected deeply on this sentiment. Why does our nursery achieve this feeling of warmth, safety, and belonging? One of the key aspects we have consciously developed is the careful selection and balance of colour in our learning environment. Over the years, we have transitioned away from bright, neon, and harsh colours in favour of a more thoughtful and nurturing aesthetic. This philosophy aligns closely with the Hygge approach in early years education, which emphasizes creating cozy, home-like spaces that foster well-being and security.

The Role of Colour in Child Development

Colour is a fundamental part of a child’s learning experience. It supports cognitive development, aids in colour recognition, and enhances creativity. However, research in early childhood psychology suggests that an overabundance of bold, highly saturated colours in a confined space can lead to overstimulation. This overstimulation can make it difficult for children to focus, regulate their emotions, and engage deeply in play-based learning. When environments are too visually overwhelming, children may experience difficulty in processing information, leading to restlessness or distraction. The Reggio Emilia approach, which places great importance on the environment as the “third teacher,” emphasizes the role of a well-balanced, aesthetically pleasing space to encourage exploration and learning.

Shifting Away from Overstimulation

Traditionally, nurseries have often been painted in bright yellows, reds, and blues, with an array of vividly coloured plastic toys filling the shelves. While these colours undoubtedly have their place in early education, a more balanced approach to colour theory is emerging in modern early years settings. We now recognize that an intentional colour palette, incorporating soft neutrals, natural tones, and gentle pastels, creates a sense of calm and security that supports children’s emotional and cognitive well-being. This perspective aligns with the Montessori approach, which advocates for an ordered, simple, and uncluttered environment to help children develop concentration and independence.

Designing a Calming and Engaging Space

At Kid’s Island Nursery in Dubai, we have mindfully designed our space to reflect the warmth and tranquility of home. By incorporating subtle pops of pastel colours alongside calming neutrals, we create a harmonious environment that fosters focus and engagement. Natural elements, such as wooden furniture, woven textiles, and indoor plants, help bridge the gap between indoor and outdoor play, reinforcing children’s connection to nature. This is strongly influenced by the Steiner Waldorf education philosophy, which values natural materials, soft lighting, and a connection to nature to enhance sensory development and imagination.

The Science Behind a Well-Balanced Environment

A well-balanced environment does not mean eliminating colour altogether. Instead, it means being intentional about its use. Carefully chosen colours can encourage specific moods and behaviors—soft greens and blues promote relaxation, muted yellows and oranges evoke warmth and cheerfulness, and earth tones provide a grounding effect. The key is to create a sensory-friendly space where children feel comfortable, inspired, and free to explore their surroundings at their own pace. This is in line with The Curiosity Approach, which encourages open-ended, natural environments that spark wonder, discovery, and child-led learning.

The Long-Term Impact of a Thoughtful Environment

Beyond aesthetics, creating a homely, well-balanced learning environment has profound benefits for young learners. A thoughtfully designed space supports emotional regulation, enhances social interactions, and fosters a sense of belonging. When children feel at ease in their surroundings, they are more likely to develop confidence, independence, and a natural curiosity for learning. This philosophy aligns with our broader mission of providing a holistic, child-led educational experience that nurtures the whole child, much like the principles found in Reggio Emilia and The Curiosity Approach.

Cherishing Memories and Creating New Ones

As an eco-conscious nursery in Dubai that has been a cornerstone of the Jumeirah community for over 30 years, we take great pride in welcoming new generations into the Kid’s Island Nursery in Dubai family. Hearing parents reminisce about their own cherished childhood experiences at our nursery is a testament to the lasting impact of an environment that truly feels like home. Childhood memories are precious, and as educators and caregivers, we hold the responsibility of creating warm, nurturing spaces where those memories can be joyfully made and treasured for years to come.

Finding Your Own Balance

By embracing balance, intentionality, and a deep understanding of how children interact with their environments, we continue to refine and enhance our approach. How do you create balance in your child’s learning space? We would love to hear your thoughts and experiences!

The Inspire Philosophy: Old School or New School?

The Inspire Philosophy: Old School or New School?

We live in a world that is modern, innovative, and ever-evolving. Technology has become an integral part of our daily lives, shaping how we work, communicate, and even learn. With every passing year, our screens become brighter, smarter, and more engaging. However, if you step into our nursery, you might notice something missing, something that sets us apart in this digital age. We don’t use screens in our nursery!

While our teachers use nursery phones to document learning moments through photos and you may occasionally hear music playing in the background, we have made a deliberate choice to minimize exposure to technology in our setting. In an era where screens are almost unavoidable, we believe that early childhood education should be rooted in real-life, hands-on experiences.

Why Do We Limit Screens?

Children today have ample opportunities to engage with tablets, smartphones, and television screens at home. With appropriate boundaries and mindful use, technology can serve as a powerful educational tool. However, in the nursery environment, our priority is to nurture children’s holistic development through active, sensory-rich, and social experiences.

1. Fostering Social and Emotional Development
Research highlights that face-to-face interactions are crucial for young children's social and emotional growth. Through play, conversations, and group activities, children learn essential skills such as cooperation, empathy, turn-taking, and problem-solving. Without digital distractions, they build strong peer relationships and deepen their connection with teachers.

2. Enhancing Language and Communication
Language development flourishes in environments rich in verbal interactions. Engaging in storytelling, role-play, and hands-on discussions allows children to expand their vocabulary, develop sentence structures, and refine their communication skills. Studies have shown that excessive screen exposure can lead to delayed language acquisition, making real-world interactions all the more valuable.

3. Encouraging Physical Development
Active play is fundamental to children’s physical well-being. Running, climbing, jumping, and manipulating real-world objects strengthen fine and gross motor skills, something screens simply cannot provide. In a screen-free environment, children naturally move more, leading to better coordination, strength, and overall health.

4. Stimulating Creativity and Imagination
Open-ended, unstructured play fosters imagination and creativity. Whether they are building with blocks, engaging in pretend play, or exploring nature, children develop problem-solving skills and innovative thinking. Without screens dictating their entertainment, they learn to create their own worlds, stories, and solutions.

5. Supporting Attention and Focus
Studies indicate that excessive screen time can impact attention span and cognitive function. In a nursery setting without screens, children engage in activities that require sustained focus, patience, and perseverance, skills that will benefit them throughout their education and life.

Finding Balance in a Digital World

Our approach isn’t about rejecting technology altogether, it’s about balance. We recognize that technology has a place in education and home life, and when used mindfully, it can complement learning. However, in early childhood, real-world interactions remain the most effective way to support holistic development.

Every family and every setting will have their own approach to technology use, and there is no single “right” way to navigate this topic. What’s important is to be intentional about when, where, and how technology is introduced.

By providing a nurturing, screen-free environment at the nursery, we empower children to explore, connect, and grow in the most natural way possible. So while they are here, we encourage them to be fully present, immersed in the joy of play, discovery, and authentic human connection.

This is how we do things, but how do you find your balance?

The Inspire Philosophy: Watch, Wait and Listen

The Inspire Philosophy: Watch, Wait, and Listen!

Have you ever truly observed a child at play, without interrupting, without guiding, and without inserting yourself? As adults, it’s a natural instinct to engage, to participate, and to support our children in every step of their journey. We are, after all, an essential part of their development. However, sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do is simply step back.

At Kid’s Island Nursery in Dubai, we embrace a play-based approach inspired by educational pioneers like Friedrich Froebel and Maria Montessori. These methodologies emphasize the importance of child-led learning, where children develop their understanding through exploration and discovery. By stepping back and allowing children to direct their own play, we provide them with the autonomy to build confidence, resilience, and critical thinking skills.

Children thrive when given the time, space, and freedom to explore their world independently. They need opportunities to make mistakes, experiment, and find their own solutions. It is in these moments, when they navigate challenges on their own, that real learning takes place. They experience the joy of discovery, the pride of accomplishment, and the resilience that comes from trying again after a setback.

When we step in too soon, we may unintentionally take away their chance to problem-solve or dampen their natural curiosity. Instead, we should give them the choice to invite us into their play, rather than assuming they need our involvement. This small shift in approach fosters independence and confidence, allowing children to feel ownership of their experiences.

Another key aspect of this philosophy is reducing the pressure of adult questioning. As parents and educators, we are endlessly curious about the thoughts and ideas of young minds. However, constant questioning "What are you making?" "Why did you do it that way?" can sometimes interrupt their thought process. Instead of encouraging deeper thinking, it may cause a child to become self-conscious or shift their focus to pleasing the adult rather than following their own interests.

The Froebel approach, which introduced the concept of kindergarten, highlights the importance of open-ended play and sensory experiences in early childhood education. Similarly, the Montessori method encourages independence and self-directed learning through hands-on activities. Both approaches align with The Inspire Philosophy we embrace at Kid’s Island Nursery, where we prioritize creating an environment that nurtures curiosity and creativity.

So, the next time you find yourself observing your child at play, take a step back. Watch. Wait. Listen. Let them lead. You might be surprised by what you see and hear, the creativity, the problem-solving, the rich storytelling, and the genuine joy that unfolds when children are given the freedom to play on their own terms.

Try it today. You just might witness something magical.

The Inspire Philosophy: Experimentation

The Inspire Philosophy: Experimentation

This week, we tried something new. New for the children, new for our staff, new for the nursery. And oh, what fun we had! Experimentation lies at the heart of discovery, and through playful, hands-on experiences, children learn in ways that are meaningful and lasting.

Every day, beautiful projects come to life across the nursery. We love to explore new ideas and infuse our Kid’s Island flare into activities and experiences, both innovative and familiar. The spark for this week’s adventure came from many different ideas: the joy of whole-nursery experiences like Splash Day, the importance of free creative expression beyond the classroom, and the potential of large blank canvases just waiting to be transformed.

Eventually, we landed on an indoor ‘yes’ space where paint was our medium and the room was our canvas. A space where creativity knew no limits, and the only rule was to explore, express, and enjoy the process.

Why is experimentation in early childhood so important?

Children are naturally curious, and by providing opportunities for open-ended exploration, we empower them to think critically, problem-solve, and develop confidence in their ideas. Experimentation fosters a growth mindset, one that values effort, resilience, and discovery over the fear of making mistakes. When children are encouraged to explore freely, they build essential life skills such as:

  • Sensory Development: Engaging in hands-on activities like painting with their bodies deepens sensory awareness and strengthens fine and gross motor skills.

  • Self-Expression: Providing an unrestricted creative space allows children to express emotions, thoughts, and ideas in ways that words sometimes cannot.

  • Collaboration and Social Skills: Shared experiences encourage teamwork, negotiation, and communication as children interact and build upon each other’s ideas.

  • Cognitive Growth: Experimentation challenges children to think critically, predict outcomes, and test hypotheses in a way that enhances cognitive flexibility.

  • Confidence and Independence: Allowing children to take ownership of their creative process fosters self-esteem and independence, as they learn that their ideas matter.

Links to Leading Early Childhood Pedagogies

Our approach to experimentation is inspired by several leading early childhood education philosophies:

  • Montessori Approach: Like Maria Montessori’s philosophy, we believe that children learn best through hands-on, self-directed exploration. By creating an environment where children can freely engage with materials, we foster independence, creativity, and a love for learning.

  • Reggio Emilia Approach: This pedagogy emphasizes the environment as the third teacher. Our ‘yes’ space aligns with Reggio Emilia’s belief in child-led, inquiry-based learning, where children express themselves through a hundred languages, including art, movement, and dramatic play.

  • Steiner Waldorf Education: Rooted in the philosophy of Rudolf Steiner, Waldorf education values sensory-rich experiences and artistic expression. Our approach encourages children to explore with their whole bodies, fostering imagination and holistic development.

  • The Curiosity Approach: This modern pedagogical movement encourages settings to be filled with authentic resources and open-ended materials, promoting deep thinking and independent discovery. By embracing experimentation, we align with this philosophy, allowing children to lead their own learning journeys.

  • Loose Parts Play: Inspired by various progressive early years philosophies, we encourage the use of loose parts and open-ended materials, allowing children to experiment with textures, shapes, and colors in an unrestricted manner.

The Magic of Open-Ended Exploration

Each age group and class experienced this creative process differently. While some children carefully painted their hands and feet methodically until they were entirely blue, others delighted in racing paint-drenched cars down ramps, eagerly observing the marks left behind. Some mixed all the colors together, fascinated by the unexpected hues they created. The beauty of open-ended exploration is that there is no right or wrong way to participate, every child’s experience is unique and valuable.

We are working to break down the stigma that paint should be limited to the end of a paintbrush. So, we leaned into the idea of children using their bodies as the tool to create art, without fear of messy hands, stained clothes, or rigid expectations. When we embrace mess as a vital part of learning, we create an environment where children feel free to take risks, experiment, and unleash their creativity without hesitation.

At our preschool in Dubai, we believe that open-ended exploration is a crucial part of early learning. By incorporating such experiences into our curriculum, we create a stimulating and dynamic learning environment for young minds, deeply inspired by the best early years pedagogies.

And we think the results speak for themselves.

How did we do?

We’d love to hear from you! How do you encourage experimentation in your learning environments? What unexpected discoveries have your children made through play? Let’s continue to celebrate the magic of open-ended, exploratory learning together at our Nursery in Dubai!

The Inspire Philosophy: Ages and Stages

We have been living in unpredictable times these last few years. A part of the process of staying healthy in these times was putting some of the things we love on hold while we figured out how to do them in a way that keeps the children’s safety at the heart of what we do.

As the world adjusts to this new normal, we can start to rejoice as former regular practices in the nursery return. And one of these things is the mingling of different age groups.

Not only do older children tend to enjoy interacting with and guiding the younger ones, but the younger ones take so much joy in getting individual attention from older children and learning from them.

It helps children to socialize and use their communication skills to share, take turns and negotiate in their play, as well as help them to learn to collaborate and cooperate with each other!

These skills can be fostered by adults too, don’t get us wrong - though, we all know there is nothing cooler than the big kids when you’re small. It helps introduce new ways to grow,
develop and build upon the idea of the entire nursery being one big home-away-from-home.

They learn from one another and cherish their time together, whether it’s new friends or old, siblings or cousins. There is always some special moments to be shared - together!

The Inspire Philosophy: Celebrations

Currently in the UAE, the celebration of Eid is taking place. It is an exciting time of year for the Muslim community filled with spiritual connection, generosity and an appreciation for friends, family and those less fortunate than ourselves.

In nursery, the concept of holidays like Eid, Diwali, Easter and many other religious holidays are hard to explain to young minds. Although, key aspects of these holidays are not so hard to incorporate into activities, discussions and everyday practice.

Many holidays are centred around colour, the moon, seasons and social customs; such as being thoughtful, generous, charitable and mindful.

All of these are wonderful topics to discuss and learn about, regardless of the time of year. It is, however, always nice to have these yearly reminders come around to let us look at our lives and cherish what we have, to be reminded of the good we’ve done and challenges over-come.

Rest, relax and rejuvenate over the holidays and spend the time with those who matter the most!

The Inspire Philosophy: Cozy Up

What makes you feel cozy? Is it a dim-lit room, candles burning lowly, a warm bath, knitted blankets and fuzzy socks? As adults, this is what usually comes to mind when we think of coziness.

Being cozy in a space encompasses the feeling of safety, security and completion. We can appreciate it and crave it, however, it can be hard to put into words.

Children are exactly the same as us. A warm, cozy environment to play, learn and relax in is essential to a balanced life and at Kid’s Island Nursery, we’ve been working very hard to achieve a sense of coziness around the nursery.

There is a wonderful word in Norwegian called “Hygge” which encompasses the meaning of being warm, safe, cozy, content and feelings of wellness under one lovely umbrella.

It’s important to remember that everyone’s definition of cozy is different. It may be sitting down to look at a book on their own, laying down for a snooze with a blanket on the carpet or singing songs with their friends.

What matters most is that children are content enough in their setting to grow in confidence and settle down. #theinspirephilsophy

As an eco nursery in Dubai who has been established in Jumeirah for the last 30 years, we are honored to welcome the next generation of students into the Kid’s Island Nursery in Jumeirah family and it is rewarding to hear parents say “I remember what it felt like when I experienced this at the nursery for the first time”. It is important to cherish your warm childhood memories and even more important to create new ones with your child.

The Inspire Philosophy: Stillness

As children go through their adventure of education, they will hear a certain phrase at least once.

“Sit still!”

We have to question why it is that “sit still” begins to have a negative connotation to it. For example, it might spark one to think things like “Am I moving too much?” or “Why can’t I move around?” That seed of doubt is one that we try to avoid planting at an early age.

As practitioners and parents, if a child struggles to sit still or simply prefers to do things on their feet, we have to ask ourselves the golden questions:
Is the child grounded?
Is the furniture comfortable for the child?
Is there too much stimulation?
Is there not enough stimulation?
What needs are not being met?

The simple answer to a lot of these questions is that every child has individual needs and we need to consider those needs. There is nothing inherently wrong with learning on their feet and being active in their learning.

One of the key ideologies that we believe in is that children learn through doing, so let them do it in ways they are comfortable and beneficial to the individual!

There are times to sit still, of course. Reading stories on the carpet, eating our food and periods of relaxation. However, like all things in life, balance is the key to success and happiness!

The Inspire Philosophy: Feet on the Ground

In these photos, you can see children busy with activities both outdoors and indoors, playing with friends or happy to play on their own; free, content and engrossed in their work. Though, there is one piece of classroom furniture absent from each of these photos…can you spot it?

That’s right, not a single child is sitting down in a chair.

Why is that?

When you sit a child in a chair, their connection with the ground beneath them is interrupted and therefore their balance is completely shifted! The solid stability of the ground beneath our feet is what helps us to be confident and accurate in our movements, so shouldn’t we be encouraging that in our children as they play?

When doing activities at tables, children should be able to explore their work with their full reach and not be limited by their seated position. Instead, take away the chairs and allow them to stand and see how they navigate their space so much more freely.

While it is important for children to anchor themselves, it is also key that they have access to furniture where they can still be stable and secure. Smaller chairs for smaller people, as well as using them at appropriate times; for example, eating their snack or because they choose to sit down for a steadier activity.

Not to mention, when you give children ample opportunities to move about their space freely without the restriction of needing to ‘sit still’, they are constantly building upon their balance, core strength, motor skills, coordination and control - among many other vital skills that are necessary to growing healthily and happily.

So what are you waiting for - stand up!

Welcome to our Learning Terrace!

Tucked into the back corner of the nursery school is a little haven that we like to call the Learning Terrace.

In its former state and in its new one, it has always been a place for imagination, mathematics and motor skills to meet one another.

Over the last few weeks, there have been new additions to add to its atmosphere and bring it up to date with our new aesthetics of warm and neutral tones, the addition of even more natural materials and open-ended learning experiences.

Wooden panels have been added to the back walls for a more dynamic look, a new table with loose parts to sort, order, count and make patterns with has been presented in the back side. The stables have been padded out with sawdust for a sensory treat and we are very proud of our collection of ‘food’ that we can cook plenty of imagination delights with.

As always, we continue to change and adapt with new times and new ideas. On to the next!

The Inspire Philosophy: Watch Us Grow

The Inspire Philosophy: Watch Us Grow

The Importance of Planting in Early Years

Planting is a fundamental activity in early years settings, offering children hands-on experiences with nature, fostering curiosity, and promoting responsibility. It combines sensory exploration, scientific discovery, and the magic of watching life unfold. Engaging with soil, seeds, and plants nurtures children's understanding of abstract concepts like growth, life cycles, and sustainability while providing an activity that can be revisited and built upon over time.

Linking Planting to Early Childhood Pedagogies

Incorporating planting within a play-based approach aligns with various early childhood pedagogies, each bringing a unique perspective to the experience. The Montessori approach emphasizes hands-on, real-life experiences, encouraging children to take ownership of their environment. Caring for plants develops fine motor skills, patience, and responsibility, key elements in Montessori's practical life activities. Reggio Emilia values the environment as the "third teacher," and a garden serves as a living classroom where children’s natural inquiries guide learning. Observing, documenting, and discussing plant growth fosters language development, collaboration, and scientific thinking. Steiner Waldorf education, which cherishes a deep connection with nature, views gardening as an avenue for creativity and rhythm, allowing children to experience the natural cycle of seasons in a meaningful, holistic way.

Enhancing Play with a Mud Kitchen

At Kid’s Island Nursery, we extend the planting experience into our Mud Kitchen, further enriching sensory play. What better way to connect with nature than by growing fresh herbs and vegetables in the same space where children engage in exploratory play? Our fresh oregano and sweet potato plants thrive in large planters, inviting children to touch, smell, and observe their development. Rubbing oregano leaves between their fingers releases a fragrant, fresh scent, enhancing sensory experiences and stimulating curiosity. These encounters align beautifully with The Curiosity Approach, which champions open-ended, authentic experiences that inspire wonder and deep engagement.

Cultivating Responsibility and Connection with Nature

As the children nurture the plants, they develop a profound respect for nature, mirroring the principles of eco-conscious learning found in Forest School education. They eagerly check the soil for roots, observe changes over time, and celebrate the visible results of their care. These authentic, hands-on interactions with nature not only cultivate a sense of stewardship but also deepen their appreciation for the interconnectedness of life.

Nurturing Growth Through Play

At Kid’s Island, we believe in the process of play. While planting can be somewhat teacher-guided, the outcomes are invaluable. Children experience the joy of nurturing something to life, building confidence and resilience along the way. More than just an activity, it is a reflection of how we, as educators, guide and nurture young minds, giving them space, time, and the right environment to grow and flourish.

The Inspire Philosophy: Find Your Balance

The Foundation of Balance and Grounding in Early Childhood

As adults, we often take for granted our ability to move with ease, being surefooted, coordinated, and balanced in our daily activities. However, for young children, these essential physical and cognitive skills take time to develop. They are built through movement, exploration, and sensory experiences, all of which are crucial for a child's overall well-being. A well-balanced child, both physically and emotionally, is more confident, self-aware, and ready to take on new challenges.

The Role of Wobbel Boards in Developing Balance

Throughout the nursery in Dubai, we have wonderful pieces of equipment best known as Wobbel boards. These beautifully designed wooden boards offer children an engaging way to develop their physical awareness, core strength, and balance. As they explore, they begin to gain a sense of how their bodies move, testing their stability and coordination in a safe and playful environment.

With the support of an adult, children can start their journey by simply rocking side to side. As they gain confidence, they experiment with different movements, extending their feet further apart, shifting their weight, and eventually finding their own rhythm and equilibrium. This process is not just about physical development; it nurtures resilience, patience, and self-trust, all vital for a child’s growth.

The Importance of Rest and Reflection

Beyond their physical benefits, Wobbel boards serve another important purpose. Children often use them as cozy rocking chairs, providing a quiet space for rest and self-reflection. In these moments of stillness, they learn to regulate their emotions, engage in independent play, and develop a sense of calm, key components of being grounded.

In early childhood education, fostering a sense of grounding is just as important as physical balance. When children are provided with opportunities to pause, reflect, and feel connected to their surroundings, they develop emotional intelligence, mindfulness, and a greater awareness of their own needs. These skills are vital for their social and emotional well-being as they navigate the world around them.

Play-Based Learning and Holistic Development

Providing children with an enabling environment that encourages movement and free exploration is fundamental in early years education. This philosophy aligns with various pedagogies, including the Reggio Emilia approach, which emphasizes child-led discovery, and the Waldorf method, which highlights rhythm, movement, and sensory experiences as key aspects of learning.

By allowing children to follow their own interests and interact with their environment in a way that feels natural to them, they develop essential motor skills without unnecessary adult interference. Whether they are testing their limits on a Wobbel board, balancing on a log outdoors, or simply engaging in free play, they are acquiring lifelong skills that contribute to their overall well-being.

The Link Between Balance, Grounding, and Cognitive Growth

Recent studies in neuroscience and child development suggest that movement and balance are closely tied to cognitive functions, including attention, memory, and problem-solving. The Montessori method also emphasizes the mind-body connection, recognizing that when children move with purpose, they enhance their learning capabilities. Encouraging activities that promote balance, such as climbing, rocking, and jumping, can have a profound impact on a child's brain development, improving concentration and self-regulation.

Creating Lasting Childhood Memories

As an eco-nursery in Dubai, established in Jumeirah for over 30 years, we are honored to welcome the next generation of students into the Kid’s Island Nursery family. It is incredibly rewarding to hear parents share their fond memories, saying, “I remember what it felt like when I experienced this at the nursery for the first time.” These moments highlight the importance of a nurturing, play-based environment where children can develop both physically and emotionally, while also creating meaningful childhood experiences that will stay with them for a lifetime.

By embracing the philosophy of balance, both physically and emotionally, we are not only fostering strong, capable children but also preparing them for a future where they can navigate challenges with confidence, mindfulness, and joy.

The Inspire Philosophy: Look Down

The Inspire Philosophy: Look Down

Mini beasts are fun to read about in books and look at in photos, however when it comes to interacting them up close and personal, most will shy away.

Whether it’s because they’re slimy, creepy, crawly or have too many eyes and legs; they aren’t usually the subject of too much love and affection.

But what if you start to show them an appreciation from an early age?

When you teach children to love and respect even the tiniest of ants, you’re able to eliminate the fear of creepy crawlies from early on.

In these photos, you will see the discovery of a beetle in one of our playgrounds and instead of wanting to step on it or run away, the children got down on the floor and watched it so patiently. Waiting, watching - excited to see what it would do next.

Then it wandered onto their hands and the experience grew further, allowing them to understand where to place their hands next in order for it to carry on moving, see it’s legs and feelers up close.

So next time you see a mini beast out and about, use it as a learning opportunity and plant a seed of curiosity. #theinspirephilosophy

The Inspire Philosophy: Story Boxes

In our nursery, there are these beautiful boxes filled with collections of treasures and trinkets surrounding specific stories.

We’re Going On a Bear Hunt, Itchy Bear, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Rainbow Fish and so many more. They are all well loved classics in their own but let’s reimagine them, shall we?

They are combined and perfected over time and hold such a special place in our nursery. The children and adults love them equally and it’s always interesting to see just what will come out of those boxes and bags.

It’s a mystery!

They are filled with items and toys relevant to the story it is made about, like the three baby owls from the Owl Babies or the array of fruits seen in The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Keep an eye out for the many different boxes we have across the nursery, there are many surprises to see! #theinspirephilosophy

The Inspire Philosophy: New Year, New Perspective

For parents and teachers, we often hear the phrase “They grow up so fast.” And that’s true, one minute our children are only just discovering their hands and feet and the next, they are heading off to nursery and telling you about their friends and what the get up to during the day.

This is the nature of growing up. But we think it’s important to remind ourselves to slow down too. Children are only the age that they are once in their life. Nursery is a few short years of developing those important life skills, establishing friendships and learning through play. It doesn’t last long enough!

There is a rush to do everything nowadays; to get into school, to learn to count to 100 and write their names. But why wish these few short years away?

Cherish them; the good moments, the hard moments, the laughs and challenges overcome! Take every day as it comes and enjoy childhood for what it is. #theinspirephilosophy

The Inspire Philosophy: Raindrops

Living in Dubai, rainy days are few and far between.
They often creep up out of nowhere and before you know it, you’re soaked from your head to your toes and standing in a puddle.

So we believe it is important that opportunities such as these are utilized as a powerful learning experience!

Think of the hours of endless fun that comes from riding through puddles on our bikes and simply splashing in them barefoot or even better, in some rubber boots.
It’s natures water play after all, so it can be utilized as an amazing sensory experience.
Capture the rainwater in whatever ways you can and bring out the funnels from the garage and the strainers from the kitchen!

For the little learners that are older, we can teach them about the clouds and shine a light on how rain actually comes to be!

It also helps children to build up resilience to change. One minute it could be sunny and warm outside and all of a sudden it’s raining; which means we might not be able to go outside at that very moment or we may have to change our outfits to fit the weather, and that’s okay!

Playing in the rain is one of the simplest joys in life, so get your spare clothes ready and get splashing! #theinspirephilosophy

The Inspire Philosophy: Talk about Toys

When you think of toys, what do you think of?
Nowadays, toy stores are stocked to the brim with plastic and toys that are meant to be watched and not truly played with.

Play shouldn’t be passive!

Play should spark imagination, create opportunities for open ended experiences that can be repeated and have different outcomes every time they are used.

Loose parts, neutral colours and recycled materials are easily processed, don’t overload the senses and allow children to use their imaginations to make their play their own!

Children should be the decision makers in their own play, explore their wants and needs and have that reflected in their exploration of the resources and ‘toys’ around them. #theinspirephilosophy

The Inspire Philosophy: Celebrating Seasons

Being based in Dubai, we are so fortunate to be able to learn about different cultures; their traditions, holiday celebrations and incorporate them into the nursery’s learning adventures.
Children love to celebrate, whether it’s a cheer at the end of their favourite story or an actual holiday like Christmas or Eid. However, we can ensure all these holidays are represented through celebrating the seasons that they fall within!
There is so much to celebrate about the changing of the seasons. Whether it’s the smells of cinnamon and the crunching of leaves in Autumn, touching ice and baking cookies in Winter, smelling flowers and celebrating colour in Spring or enjoying the sun and sand in Summer.
Seasonal activities are engaging and exciting for children of all ages . The wonderful world of seasons and the changes in smells, sounds, tastes and weather are a sensory dream!

The Inspire Philosophy: Barefoot

The Inspire Philosophy: Barefoot

Two of our bodies' most sensitive areas, full of nerves and receptors, are our hands and our feet! Little hands are always experiencing new things, but what about their feet?

Children’s brains learn through experiences. The input from what they touch, taste, smell, feel, and hear is what creates new neural pathways in their brains. Each time they experience these sensations again, those neural pathways become stronger, allowing for quicker and more efficient processing. That’s why we always say that practice makes perfect!

How does it feel to dip our feet in ice-cold water? Or feel the slipperiness of paint between our toes? How about the tickle of grass as we run through it? These experiences are rich in sensory input, helping children develop proprioception (body awareness) and vestibular function (balance and coordination).

The Benefits of Going Barefoot in Early Childhood

The more time spent barefoot, the more opportunities children have to develop a range of essential skills:

  • Improved Balance and Coordination: When children are barefoot, they engage the small muscles in their feet and ankles, which are crucial for balance and stability.

  • Strengthened Foot Muscles: Shoes can restrict natural movement, while going barefoot allows for the full range of motion, strengthening the arches and promoting healthy foot development.

  • Enhanced Sensory Perception: Walking barefoot provides vital sensory feedback, improving spatial awareness and helping children better understand their environment.

  • Better Posture and Alignment: Natural foot movement supports the body’s alignment, reducing the risk of flat feet and other postural issues.

  • Grounding and Emotional Regulation: The practice of ‘earthing’ or ‘grounding’ connecting with the natural elements through bare feet, has been shown to have calming effects, reducing stress and improving mood.

Links to Educational Pedagogies

The importance of being barefoot aligns with several early childhood pedagogies:

  • Montessori Philosophy emphasizes sensory-rich environments where children learn through direct experience. Going barefoot encourages children to engage with their surroundings more fully, refining their sensory processing skills.

  • Reggio Emilia Approach values experiential learning, where children are given the freedom to explore their world in a natural and unstructured way. Being barefoot allows for a deeper connection to their learning environments.

  • Waldorf Education promotes a holistic approach to child development, where movement and sensory experiences are essential for cognitive and emotional growth. Barefoot exploration aligns perfectly with Waldorf’s emphasis on nature and physical play.

  • Forest Schools encourage outdoor learning, where children are often barefoot to better experience and connect with their environment. This enhances their resilience, independence, and physical development.

The Legacy of Barefoot Play at Kid’s Island Nursery

As an eco-nursery in Dubai, established in Jumeirah for the last 30 years, we are honored to welcome the next generation of students into the Kid’s Island Nursery family. As a leading Nursery in Dubai and Preschool in Dubai, we understand the importance of sensory-rich experiences in early childhood education. It is rewarding to hear parents say, “I remember what it felt like when I experienced this at the nursery for the first time.”

Cherishing childhood memories and creating new ones is essential for fostering a lifelong love for learning and exploration. So, the next time you visit the park, play in the garden, or engage in messy play, why not do it barefoot? Let’s embrace the magic of natural learning, one barefoot step at a time!
